Our Story

Get to know more about what makes us different.

First United Methodist Church has been a spiritual anchor in Rocky Mount for generations, shaped by the deep roots of Methodism in Eastern North Carolina. Born out of the Methodist movement’s commitment to holiness, community, and mission, FUMC’s story reflects both the changing needs of the city and the steady faithfulness of God.

Methodist preaching circuits reached the Rocky Mount area in the 1800s, long before a formal congregation was organized. As the community grew, local families gathered regularly for worship, prayer, and fellowship, eventually forming what would become First Methodist Church. A downtown sanctuary was established as Rocky Mount developed into a thriving mill and railroad town, and the church quickly became a center of spiritual life, education, and community outreach.

Throughout the 20th century, First Methodist Church expanded its ministries, facilities, and mission. Sunday School classes flourished, youth and children’s programs grew, and the church became known for strong worship, vibrant music, and an enduring commitment to serving neighbors in need. Following the 1968 merger that formed the United Methodist Church, the congregation continued to deepen its dedication to discipleship, missions, and connectional ministry.

Today, First United Methodist Church, Rocky Mount, remains a place where people can grow in faith, build community, and serve with compassion. With a historic sanctuary, a flourishing preschool, multigenerational ministries, and ongoing missions in and beyond the city, FUMC continues to live out its calling: to know Christ, make Christ known, and share His transforming love with our neighbors.

Rooted in its heritage and looking toward God’s future, First United Methodist Church stands as a welcoming community of hope, grace, and steadfast faith for Rocky Mount and beyond.
